From Inspiration to Commercialization

The Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC) is pleased to announce the launch of its online information magazine, Cybermag-TL.

This electronic publication, which will be posted on the LTRC’s website (www.ltrc.ca), is intended for LTRC partners and others in the language and information technology industries to keep them informed about the most recent developments in this field.

The next issue will be posted in the spring. Please feel free to let others in your professional network know about Cybermag-TL, and contact us if you would like to subscribe on behalf of a friend or colleague. We also welcome your comments and feedback.

The LTRC is getting ready to move! Construction of a new building, which began in early 2005, will be completed in February 2006, and in March, we will begin moving the LTRC’s offices and laboratories to the new location. Telephone and fax numbers will remain the same. The new address is as follows:

A software program that was developed at the LTRC enables the user to automatically measure usage of a term or a terminology within a population group, to determine people’s preferences or to examine trends in the use of certain terms over time.

The software opens up new horizons for terminometrics, an innovative field of study pioneered by Barçah project leader Jean Quirion. This project, undertaken by the Department of Language Studies of the Université du Québec en Outaouais, was recognized in 2005 with an honourable mention in the Mérites du français dans les technologies de l'information competition (Merits of French in Information Technology awards), sponsored by the Office québécois de la langue française.

Barçah’s tools provide all the functions that users require, in a user-friendly environment. The software will soon incorporate a new function: semi-automatic disambiguation. Terminologists at the federal government’s Translation Bureau and the Office québécois de la langue française are participating in terminometrics projects and will be using this new version of the Barçah software.

During the current cross-Canada tour by AILIA (Association de l'industrie de la langue / Language Industry Association), the LTRC will present results of the Technology Roadmap project. Just as a regular roadmap can be used to chart an itinerary, technology roadmapping can help the language industry to orient and guide the development of language technologies. The Technology Roadmap identifies useful landmarks, such as future needs in specific technical fields, current capabilities and proposed measures to meet future needs.

Technology Roadmap results will be presented from 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. at each of the tour sessions outlined below.
