| The Université du Québec en Outaouais and its partners hosted the official inauguration of their new building on May 19. The new facility is located directly on the university campus, at 283 Alexandre-Taché Boulevard. Christiane Melançon, language studies professor at UQO, was named the personality of the week by Radio Canada and Le Droit for the week of May 22nd. It is not by chance that the nomination coincided with the official opening of the LTRC. Her nomination underlines her important contribution to the launch of the centre which will be an internationally recognized centre of excellence in the language technology field. Christiane Melançon has taught at UQO since 1993 and contributed to the development of a language studies department at UQO. In just a few years, UQO has become one of the top three institutions in Canada in training translators. Thanks in a large part to Christiane’s efforts, today UQO differentiates itself by its unique focus and by the highly integrated use of language technology tools in the teaching and training of language professionals.

| PORTAGEshared: R&D licence available | ||||

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) announced on June 7th, at the AI 2006 Conference in Quebec City, that it offers its Statistical Machine Translation (SMT) software system to Canadian universities interested in R&D in the SMT area. The system is a fully operational basic version – PORTAGEshared – and is offered as source code and as an executable version, licensed for research and education purposes. Machine translation is gaining renewed interest thanks to the use of statistical techniques, which produce improved performance compared to traditional machine translation systems based on expert systems. As a result, research and development (R&D) in SMT is spreading rapidly around the world. However, to begin a R&D program in SMT requires a significant effort in implementing a basic software system that can serve as a foundation for R&D activities. PORTAGEshared will allow interested parties to start R&D activities in SMT without having to spend precious time developing a fully functional basic system. The intent of sharing this expertise being the creation of a SMT community of practice in Canada, the licensing model used for PORTAGEshared encourages interaction between participating universities, the sharing of their experience, as well as the sharing of improvements that will be brought to the software system. The training of highly qualified personnel in the area of SMT is also an objective of this licensing program of the PORTAGEshared software system. | Contribution agreement AILIA/IC | ||||

Summer has finally arrived and so has the government financial support for AILIA! The president of AILIA is pleased to report that the Honorable Maxime Bernier, minister of Industry Canada, has approved the last portion of the five-year contribution agreement, providing financial support for AILIA until the end of March 2008. The signature of the agreement was confirmed after a number of people worked together to make sure the new Conservative government had a good understanding of the value of our industry and the investments made to date by both the public and private sector. AILIA’s president and vice-president contacted colleagues of the minister such as Mrs. Josée Verner, minister responsible for the Official Languages, opposition members of parliament such as Mr. Marcel Proulx of Gatineau, and Mrs. Dyane Adam, Commissioner of Official Languages.
