The Directory of Terminologists Practising in Canada Is Finally Here!

Joint Committee on Terminology in CanadaOn October 24, the LTRC will welcome the members of the Joint Committee on Terminology in Canada (JCTC) at the official launch of the Directory of Terminologists Practising in Canada.

These terminology enthusiasts are eager to unveil the on-line directory, which will be accessible from the LTRC’s Web site.

The JCTC – a multi-sectoral partnership composed of university, private sector and Government of Canada’s Translation Bureau representatives – is committed to promoting the terminology profession in Canada, and the creation of the Directory is a step toward achieving that goal. This one-of-a-kind resource will help to raise awareness of the profession across the country.

Get ready, fellow language professionals: the Directory is finally here!

Open Source Software licensing: an up-to-date summary

Open Source Software (OSS), a regular topic of heated discussions, are increasing their penetration beyond IT infrastructure (Linux, Apache, etc.) into everyday applications aimed at end users (Firefox, Open Office, Wiki, etc.). Several governments and organizations are now in the process of migrating from proprietary software to OSS and open standards for their daily operations.

A recent book on OSS licensing by Larry Rosen ('Open Source Licensing – Software Freedom and Intellectual Property Law', 2005, 397 pp.), a founder and Emeriti Counsel of OSI (the Open Source Initiative), describes the various types of OSS licences and analyses in detail the legal aspects of the major OSS licence models.

In order to make the content of this reference work more palatable to programmers, researchers, and technology transfer practitioners, Michel Mellinger (NRC) has prepared a summary of Larry Rosen’s book – under an open content licence, of course.

This summary is available on request (Michel.Mellinger@cnrc-nrc.gc.ca), in PDF format.
